Returning to Japan - 04-01-2010, 04:13 AM

I have had a quick serach around to see if I can find anything bout this but with no luck.
If somebody knows of a thread which already exists please let me know.

First of all, I am currently staying in Nagoya on holiday, but in 2 days I have to return to England.
I have been here before in the Summer and despite the heat I loved it then too.
So obviously I am already planning when to come back.

Aside from normal holidays I have looked into working holiday visas and so if I can get one of those I would be very happy.
But I have heard that once you have been in Japan once before, it can be quite hard to get back in again if you leave (Not that getting here is easy in the first place)
Please bare in mind this is only what I have heard and dont really know if it is true or not.

My question is, if I were to come here at some point on a working holiday visa, would it make it any more difficult in any way to return in the future to try and live here for a longer amount of time?

I really want to live here some day, and I want to visit as much as possible while I study for my bachelors at uni, but I dont want to damage any chances of trying to live here, so any opinions or help on this would be appreciated.

I have never heard of something like this being a problem. I know you might have some trouble trying to get back to back tourist visas etc..

But I cannot see why what you described would be a problem. Where are you hearing these things, and in specifically what context are they being talked about? Also, when you say, come and live here for a longer amount of time.. how exactly would you plan on doing this? You will still need a visa to enter the country again (most likely a regular work visa) unless you are married to a Japanese national of course (then you can get a spouse visa). And then probably need to live here for at least 5 years before you will be able to apply for permanent residency.

Thank you for your reply.

Unfortunately I cant say exactly where I heard these things, but it has mainly been from people who have lived in Japan once before and not had much luck getting back over there again.

Of course this is probably due to unforseen curcumstances etc. but I didnt think to ask them at the time, so I was just curious.

When I say a longer amount of time, I mean longer than a year.
I cant say exactly how long I plan on trying to live here in total since I have never tried it before (Hence why i am looking at working holiday visas) so dont know what it is like, but being that I mean longer than a year I would say 2 - 3 years at the least (That is assuming that I could live here ok if I got a working holiday visa for a year)

But since its difficult to say how long I want to try and live in Japan it could be longer.

So you're asking us if it'd be harder to get a work visa, spouse visa, student visa, etc. if you come to Japan on a working holiday visa prior to that?

I've never heard of that and I'm not sure how it'd make a difference.
