Question Gaijin as a Robotic Engineer??? - 10-23-2011, 02:19 AM

Ok well I'm foreign well no duh, the title kinda says it, and I always since I was 12 wanted to work with robots. oh my ya it even sounds kinda silly and cliche. Although if your wondering yes I'm taking proper steps in being a robotic engineer but I'm still at the early stages were I could back out if I want, so my question is.... Well I've been hearing a lot about how gaijin have trouble getting a job even with a degree and how a lot of people usually won't hire a foreigner, so is it still worth for me to try to get my masters(and hopefully a doctoral) in japan and get a job there to? I mean are my chances that severely shot because I'm foreign. Heh, it also might be good to add that I'm mexican-american so even more foreign. I just wanna know how my chances are even when studying this feild. sooo ya.

I think it's all about whether you've got anything you can do that a Japanese person couldn't. Otherwise they'll hire the Japanese person,I think.

A gaijin working as an engineer in a Japanese firm (me, that is) agrees.

There is a thread with the theme "gaijin as roboticist in Japan". We'd be happy to answer any questions not already answered there.

I'm in a somewhat related field, more software than hardware though. It is certainly possible.

Just become as good in your field as you can, network, and opportunities tend to emerge in a variety of places.

I've got my masters but no PHD yet, perhaps in the future.

It's like any field, become one of the best in it and the firms will come looking for you.
