By the way, made a mistake in an earlier post. "Mobile phone" is 手机 shou3 ji1,not 手几 shou3 ji3.
Mobile phone in Japanese is 携帯電話 ( keitai denwa )

手 - this means hands right ?
机 - this means desk right ?

how did a hand and a desk became a mobile phone ?

Just so you know Japan has very low rape stats in fact some of the lowest in the world. Also when it comes to being employed especially as a foreigner you may find it hard. Remember this is not something found only in japan as most business' in every country prefer to hire people of their own nationality.
This means that you could try getting a job in a multinational company as they are more likely to hire you than those that are not.

机 means machine. Since Japanses adopted some of the simplified characters, but not all (for example 電話 instead of 电话),you might recognize 机's traditional form 機. 机 gets used in all kinds of words - like 飞机. 飞 means to fly, so a "flying machine" is an airplane. Chinese is funny that way.

This has really gotten off-topic, hasn't it? Haha.

機 I know, its the one use for machine read as "ki"

飛ぶ - tobu is the one for flying

combining it with fly + go + machine = airplane
飛行機 - hikouki - airplane
its still a flying machine but there is a to go by flying machine

yeah out of topic though, but I think more interesting

sorry mods...

Don't dwell on it too much. If you move to Japan you just have to accept Japanese society the way it is and not complain how things are so different back home. Just count yourself luck you are not moving to an Arab or Muslim country

That's right jasonchua. Moving to a country that is as foreign as Japan to westerners requires a lot of flexibility from the newcomer. A lot! Sure, there are familiar things like McDonald's and Starbuck's and 7-11, but they aren't the same... not even close. It requires a strong sense of self and an adventurous spirit, as that journey may be tougher than any marathon and higher than Mt. Everest.

You definately learn a lot about yourself.

You got it right, but japan is riben. The characters would be 我爱中国,可是日本是我的家。

I'll be in China for a few more years, provided China and America don't start some massive trade war that turns every Chinese citizen against Americans. With the way things are going American's soon might be second on the Chinese "Most Hated Nations" list. We might already be, according to a Japanese classmate of mine. So, if I don't have to run for the hills I'll be around for a while. Look me up if you ever come. Should I ever be able to save enough money to visit Japan I'll PM you.
