Ethnic issues in Japan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In 2005, a United Nations report expressed concerns about racism in Japan and that government recognition of the depth of the problem was not total.[1][2] The author of the report, Doudou Diène (Special Rapporteur of the UN Commission on Human Rights), concluded after a nine-day investigation that racial discrimination and xenophobia in Japan primarily affects three groups: national minorities, descendants of former Japanese colonies and foreigners from other Asian countries.[3]

How Sexism in Japan Worsens Its Debt Outlook

That faint cracking noise heard around Japan this week is the sound of its glass ceiling being breached. At least that's the hope as this male-dominated society waits to see if a woman will run a major Japanese company for the first time. Japan hardly has a monopoly on discrimination, yet how often does the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) urge a developed nation to provide women more job opportunities to boost growth? It's doing just that in Japan, where even the minister in charge of gender issues is a man.
There's some info for ya.

It is fine to dream but learn about Japanese culture first, try and learn the language, decide what you want to do for work and then travel to Japan. Then consider moving there.

Personally, I don't want to move to Japan but I would like to travel there every so often. When I get older I want to be a game programmer in the US. Not just because I like games, but because I like computer programming too and I am learning more programming languages all the time. I also want to write some manga either by working with people in Japan while still living in the US or writing in the US for tokyopop or some similar company. Make a list of goals. Get a head start to help ensure success. I am 13 now. For example, my goals are:

Learn Japanese
Finish writing my book
Learn all of the major programming languages used in game programming
Continue to do volunteer work on a certain MMORPG I volunteer on now
Go to school for a computer or game (or something like either) programming bachelors and masters degree
Find a way to help with the writing and/or storyline of manga

With 13 you may have many dreams.
But the most important thing is always to be prepared as good as possible, if you ever want to move to another country. Here in Germany there are at the moment many many TV documentations about Germans who move to foreign countries. And so often there are people who don't speak the language of the country, who have never been to that country before and so on...

And then those people always wonder why they are outsiders in that country.

But then again it's surely not that bad. Every country has a bit of nationalism or racism or whatever. Same with sexism.

People who tell tales of Japan being really racist or sexist just see what they want to see.

i agree. every country has its own narrow-minded personalities. i myself has experienced some form of discrimination based on my gender, skills, built, or nationality -- from fellow nationals!!!

i am a female electrical engineering graduate from the top university in my country. after doing policy work for the government for a few years, i tried to switch careers and go into the mainstream engineering industry. i was disappointed to find out that a lot of companies (if not most of them) hire only male EE's to do the technical work for them, and hired female engineers only to do their sales!

anyway, i am now considering an offer to work in Japan as a programmer (which i believe i'll enjoy doing better than i would the EE stuff), and i'm thinking that this might (at last) be the start of something good. i have thought of seeing japan since i was 10 years old, but now i have the chance of experiencing life in japan for an extended period.

so, to forgotenmemory, i want to say that there may come harsh realities in your life that you cannot control or have any influence on, but these you have to face and deal with (without violence, i hope *wink*). however, you can't let these things hinder you in striving for what you want to be or what you want to achieve.

Hey, I know you're young. But another great way of going to Japan sooner would be to go as an exchange student. I with I would of gone through what you are, when I was younger. But anyway, google online for High school/Junior High exchange programs; I believe this is the best way for you to go to Japan and at least live there for a year or two. After that come back, do well in College and go back. That's what I think.

Sorry if someone already said this, don't have enough time right now to read all the pages.

Good Luck, and by the way I've been dreaming of going to Japan for over 4 years now. About to graduate and make my dream come true.

Oh and one more thing, don't let fear ruin your dreams. Life is about facing your fears; everyone has them. But if you give in, just because you might get hurt then you lose; then the question would be why even dream?

Well I might get made fun for saying that, oh well. Good Luck again.

Japanese are more lenient to Caucasians. It's different for Asians. There's still a bias in terms of how they respond to you and stuff like that.
