I think that is an awesome dream.
However, visa laws in Japan are more stringent than they are here, and so it would be very difficult to find a Japanese animation studio in Japan willing to host your visa. This would only happen if you had something to offer that a Japanese native couldn't supply. So if you were an established and well-known animator in the US, then the possibility increases. 99% of the foriegners in Japan are either language teachers or work in the service industry (restuarants, bars, etc.)
A better option would be to try to get a job as a teacher, and find an in into the animation industry.
Or marry a Japanese...
