Been thinking about this lately, so decided to ask here instead of making a thread about it. Anyway, as most know here, Karaoke is really popular and mainstream in Japan. At the karaoke boxes located throughout the country, what types of foods or drinks are common for that type of thing? What do most karaoke places serve? Do they serve meals or just light snacks? What types of foods?

The only places I know that have karaoke are 1) karaoke "boxes" and 2) snack / hostess bars. 1) karaoke boxes are rented by the hour and are private rooms a group (large or small) can go to sing karaoke, eat and drink. Alcohol is certainly available. The prices are nominal, and you don't have to worry about embarrassing yourself in front of strangers. 2) snack / hostess bars are a different story. They tend to be expensive, which a charge of anywhere from 1000 yen to XXXXX yen just to sit down. Karaoke is a common activity (especially as the alcohol flows). |

It's very usual. And drinks are cheap - in fact, I'd say karaoke is probably the cheapest place to drink in Japan, as most places have an all you can drink (nomihoudai) option. At our karaoke place, it costs 1700 Yen for nomihoudai for 12 hours, on top of the price of the room.
