OK, please tell me why Japanese people write wo rather than o as they pronounce it? Or ha instead of wa. It's sth to do with the kanji, right? I was told years ago but didn't really follow. It must've been a boozy night

My guess would be that it has mainly to do with when they developed the romaji alphabet. They had to transcribe the sounds the best they could and with お already taking the place of "o", を had to be given another set of letters and it became "wo". As for why は is pronounced as "ha" in some cases and "wa" in others, it is just how the language developed. Even though it may seem strange, English has tons of weird rules in the language that don't make any sense.

Why do you pronounce "phone" as "fone" and not "pone?" Or "thought" as "thoggggt" Why is the "s" in "island" silent? Because that's just the way it is. Same in Japanese. It's just how it works. 猿も木から落ちる
