I like how people who are good photographers say "I'm really bad at photography".

The best place to learn photography is not in a photography class. Take a painting or drawing class instead. Photography is art, and as an art, the principles of composition taught in painting and drawing classes apply directly to photography.

Photography classes tend to "focus" on how to use a camera, and understanding light. These two things are important, but most modern digital cameras focus themselves and automatically determine exposure.

A good photographer (which I don't claim to be) takes pictures with composition being the first consideration. Once one has decided the proper composition, then the amount of exposure and depth of field, etc, can be decided.

Personally, I prefer black and white film photography right now. I got tired of the artificially bright colors that I often see in digital photography. Taking the colors away leaves only light and shadow, which can be dramatic if composed properly. I also like black and white film because it is easy to develop myself.

@Sangetsu ...true, but you do need to learn how to use the hardware as well... there's iso pushing and pulling techniques, aperture, exposure time, focus, zoom, flash settings (i hate flash personally but sometimes it has it's merit)
and of course all the manipulations you can do these days in camera with digital...

I am completely film based btw.
I'm just saying it really helps to know your arsenal which can best be done by researching and just getting the frick out there and using it.

and sexy Photos Misa!.. as always.

These were all taken with my Leica M4 on Kodak Tri-X 400 film, developed in my kitchen, and scanned on an Epson flatbed scanner.

Japan photobook - 04-01-2010, 05:27 AM

Japan | By Scott N. Walker | Category: Travel | Blurb

This is not an attempt to sell copies! I am interested in entering this book in a competition but need to redo it. I would welcome input as to what could be added/ deleted. Would you like text and or photo explanation? Development of any themes... Etc. Anything would be appreciated. Even if you think it's rubbish, please comment as to why you think so. Would be very grateful.

Thank god for that! Cos I recently bought a Nikon D3000 so I don't know much about photography! Looking at that, if there was a camera that could take pictures like that directly, I'd be pretty upset right now! lol
