There is a huge difference between Coke and Pepsi. And if you take the diet version of both drinks, the difference between the two is larger than it is with men and women.

everything is relative and contradictory ~

C'mon!

It's just cola! Sure there's a difference. But essentially it's the same drink.

Classic coke taste way different that Pesi, noticeably different. RC is slightly in between the two. Wish they made RC Draft again, made with actual kola nuts and cain suger, that stuff was awsome.

I gotta admit I used to think there were so many differences in all the western cultures until I lived in Korea, and then in Japan, and now it all quite seems the same to me. Sure a few minor differences but all in all it would be very difficult to distinguish most westerners from one another by reading their opinions on any random topic.

I'm inclined to disagree . . . In most important matters like capital punishment, gay rights, the role of religion and the state, etc. the opinions of westerners vary hugely from culture to culture, and often person to person. If you were to ask an Italian, an Englishman or an American on their opinions of said topics you could probably hazard an accurate guess that they weren't all from the same Western country, if not specifically which country they were from. Even trivial things such as fashion, cuisine, education all vary immensely . . .

I'm so glad to find someone else who notices the difference in taste! To me I much prefer diet pepsi, it's just sweeter - without being as sickly sweet as Dr.Pepper is - and doesn't make your eyes water when you drink it XD

Aspartame makes me gag.

I suppose the passion with which Western cultures tend to bicker about points that many Asians tend to just not get flustered about is the cultural distinction I'm making, not the side of the fence someone is on, but rather how red-faced they might get in upholding their beliefs, it all starts to look the same.
And I'm not sure that the general opinions on the topics you mentioned are strong in either direction.
When it comes to homosexuality, abortions, religion, capital punishment etc I'm pretty sure that conversations I've had with people from all western lands have been quite similar, and I'd bet that the polls would be quite close. I wonder if there are statistics on this...

Ah, yeah, I can see what you mean now.

I'm not too sure when it comes to those topics, a lot of the people who engage in those conversations seem to get very flustered and opinionated, so i would argue opinions are strong, but then again the opinions of a few don't represent the many. I guess my argument was that capital punishment is outlawed in the UK but not the US, Italy is very religious but religon isn't a vital role in France, - for examples - and so wondered if the countries stance to these issues didn't reflect the opinions of its people. Then again I suppose that's an issue for the 'generalisation' thread. I do wonder if there are any statistics too though . . .

Exactly... It's been my experience also.

I've been to about half of all Western countries and all native, English speaking countries bar Ireland and while in those countries I realised.. I could just as easily be the person I am today and be native to these countries. The only difference being maybe the language or the accent I speak English with.

lol, yeah I'm from Canada and it's more of a melting pot of all cultures than many other countries are, but I remember meeting other westerners and always thinking "you and are the same... like minus some weird custom no one cares about and a little different climate"

Robin I think the "Country Opinion" Idea is valid but I have a feeling most the results are a lot closer to a 60/40 opinion rather than a landslide lol.
