Sadly I've broken hearts more times than I've had mine broken, I've learned one thing through it, the slower you try to let someone go, to try to avoid hurting that person, the more it hurts them.

I agree the worst thing you can do is lead someone on when you stop caring as much for them. It is best to end it quickly. Also you need to make it clear that you ate done. I have had a few people who did not seem to realize that it is over means it is over.

I wonder what's the best way to make someone realize it's over in a way that isn't too damaging but still isn't leading.

there is no easy way really-- but not just by phone or email etc. It is better to be direct but it can have a devastating effect so make sure he or she does not have to drive home afterwards.
